Rate response and off road motorbikes

Hi Ya,

back to riding dirt bikes after a long time trying to get back to fairly normal a life as I can after having a Boston CRTD set DDIR fitted . Been ok for a while now but does the rate reponse sence acceleration? I ask because I felt a bit of a fast heart rythmn after accelerating flat out on a bumpy road. I was completly relaxed up to this point and a few minutes later felt fine but thought it best to have a rest.

It was probably the bumpy road that did it !

Hi MG     Your DDIR setting means that you have Rate Response switched on ,  so you obviously need help in increasing your heart-rate when you exercise.

Your Boston CRTD probably has two sensors to detect when you are exercising.  One sensor detects changes in your breathing  ( the minute ventiation sensor )  I doubt that your breathing changes that much when you are accelerating along those bumpy roads but maybe the excitement does add a little to your increased heart-rate,

The other sensor is known as an " accelerometer "  but it actually responds more to vibration than it does to acceleration .  So when you accelerate flat out on  bumpy roads the sensor will definitely increase your heart-rate because of the vibration.  There will be a maximum sensor rate setting so it is not life-threatening .

Try accelerating flat out on a smooth road without bumps and I bet you won't experience the increase in heart-rate.

I was reading through your post and Ian's explanation. I get some really odd heart beats when I am on rough roads. I never thought much about it. My heart is so damaged and it is a bit out of sync a lot. I stopped worring about it years ago. I just let it happen, if I am going to go sour, worry is not going to prevent it.  My EP has done his best to keep me alive so that is all I am able to ask.

I ride a bike, gave up my off road bike when I crashed it and hurt myself. Now. I have a road bike for touring, I noticed in some places, my heart really speeds up I thought it was just part of having a wonky heart.  Now, I bet my CRT is responding to the rough road. I am going to pester my EP about it. My previous CRT was awful everytime I became active, I would start feeling very ill. I hated the first device, this CRT is smaller and works great for me.  Now, if my heart were in better shape it would be nice, however, I have what I have and lucky to have it.
