new to this

hello,

I was a picture of health at 58 yrs young up until Jan 30th and started feeling light headed during workouts.

My doctor did a ekg and said it looked different than 5 yrs ago so scheduled a stress test.

Well 10 1/2 minutes into the test, my heart rate went from 160 to 240 and sustained Vtach for 10 minutes.

They ran every imaginable test and now I have this ICD in me due to none other than genetics.

This was and still is hard to except along with having to live on beta blockers from now on, when I wasn't on any meds for anything

I know I'm lucky to be alive because of where and with who it happened and I'm not wallowing in self pity just still adjusting mentally and physically to this whole ordeal.

I know in time I'll be able to work out again and do alot of the things I used to but for now I have to be patient and thankful.

take care Randy

Hi Randy.

i was 53 and was also picture of health and was getting exhausted during workouts. Long story short - I had a type 1 and then type 2 2:1 Mobitz block and then Sick Sinus Syndrome.  Pacemaker in 3 years ago to the day tomorrow!  It took a few trips to get it adjusted correctly but I run every other day for 3 miles at 9:00 minute pace.  A bit slower than I used to but hell, faster than most of our contemporaries.

You will be back in action sooner than you think. As I like to tell my wife..."At least it wasn't anything serious...it wasn't my ....".  Use your imagination, this is a family site!

Keep the faith!!!!

I have a theory

I think so many athletic folks have pacemakers because they notice something is wrong when working out.  Many times the first time sedentary folks have a clue is when they are dead.

not an athelete

I am not an athelete, but considered my self very healthy. At 53 I walk during the day about 5 - 6 miles every day. The only thing wrong was a geneteic defect and I had been on toprol for about 8 or 9 years.

Started getting tired. Up at 5:30 home at 6:30 and chores after getting home.

I was used to going and doing and I could do a lot. Full time job, ran business on side, and had massive amount of hobbies.

How you doing now Randy?

I have so much in common with your story.  50 years old, no tablets and worked out 6 days a week. Started having chest pressure just after Christmas, slight pneumonia, given antibiotics and recommended to do a stress test because by father had a couple of heart attacks in his 50s.

I wasn't worried about the test, there was nothing wrong with me!  I did 15 minutes on the treadmill and it was a couple of minutes after I stopped and they asked me to hold my breath and that's the last thing I remember until I awoke to a room full of people and the doctor said, we lost you for a few minutes but we got you back!!  Resulting in me having an ICD fitted the next day as a 'precaution'!

I too am struggling with the whole tablets and having this thing inside me which is stopping me doing what I want at the moment.  I can't imagine at this stage getting back to where I was.  I know it's only 8 weeks since my first surgery and 4 since my second after pulling the lead out but I feel so sore and uncomfortable at the moment and even walking is painful, so there's no chance of me running or kickboxing again in the near future.  I worked so hard over the last 4 years to lose weight and get fit and was in the best shape of my life, or so I though.  Wondering why I bothered.
