Tens Treatments

Has anyone had any experience having a Tens treatment used for muscle stimulation and pain relief while having a pacemaker?  i checked the maunfacturers website and they do not recommend using a Tens unit but some people say that as long as you keep the probe pads at least 12" away from the PM, they are OK. The manufacturers may be stating this to be on the safe side, but store theft devices and MRI's are considered safe with caution. I have had treatment for sciatica prior to the PM insertion and it help a lot.

Ask your doctor, and you can also call the manufacturer. I was told extemeties are ok but not the torso. Muscle stim and ultrasound are ok.

No Tens for me

My doctor told me not to use my tens anymore.  I used it for my neck and shoulders due to arthritis and he said it could cause problems with the pacemaker.  So, I don't use it.

I've done TENS

I've had TENS treatments twice since getting a PM.  The effect, in my experience, is very localized.

I'd be leary of puttling the leads anywhere on my chest or upper back, and just to be on the safe side, I'd start with the intensity very low, but I would use it again if need be.

I think it made a real difference in keeping the muscles in my hand and arm viable while a pinched nerve situation was sorted outl.
