Pacemaker and pack shoulder straps

If you are considering getting a pacemaker I encourage you to work with your surgeon to ensure that you'll still be able to carry a pack without having the strap rub on your pacer site.

In the month prior to getting my pacemaker I heard warnings about the potential for rubbing and/or pressure due to pack straps over the pacemaker site. Because I didn't want to sacrifice my mountain time I asked my surgeon to place the pacer so it wouldn't be right under a pack strap. The nurses in the pre-operation room chuckled as I stood there in my hospital gown and put on my day pack followed by a large internal frame pack and finally my beloved Kelty external frame. The surgeon eyeballed the straps, marked my chest and used that info to place the pacer so it is NOT under any of my shoulder straps. I haven't had any problems with the straps and have not needed to limit my hiking, XC skiing or backpacking.

Happy trails!

This doctor is a 'keeper' if his/her medical skills are equal to his/her empathy.

Also congrats on being so active.

Not a hiker but.............

I'm not a hiker and so don't really have a back pack on very much.  However my carry on suitcase I take on plane trips converts from handle carry to pack pack style.

I've used it as a back pack several times since getting the pacemaker last fall and have to say I never even gave the pacemaker a thought.  Perhaps repeated 5 to 10 hour stretches while hiking could have a different effect my short term experience was positive.

pm placement

My ICD (and previous pm) was placed subpectorally.  It's perfectly placed with no problems with backpacking or other activities.  So fortunate when we have EPs that are understanding and listen to requests and concerns.

I do avoid slinging things with single straps to rest on my shoulder on my ICD side---don't want to irritate anything or cause problems.

love it!
