Hi Everyone,

My Cardiologist has recommended cardioversion to regulate my atrial fibrillation.

My main concerns are, will this procedure affect my ICD/Pacemaker function, will the cardioversion work and/or would it make it even worse??

My General Practitioner doesn't really know!!

It would be great to have your feedback.

 Many thanks, Ozzie

Afib and cadioversion

Your question caught my eye because my sister, 89, is dealing with Afib. She was given a pacemaker so she would be able to take Afib medication and has not done at all well since. Having very little knowledge of Afib I'm trying to bring myself up to speed.

Do you know there is an Afib website along the same lines as the Pacemaker Club? It is StopAfib.org and has a forum where questions can be posted.

According to StopAfib.org cardioversion has a success rate of 90% but in many cases the Afib returns shortly unless medication is added.

No problem.  Had one few months ago. They just  check PM function before and after procedure. There is a safety cut out device built into PMs that allow for the electrical shock.

Cardioversion  ( either chemical or electrical) is associated with a failure rate (which increases with time).  You just have to take your chances.

Cardioversion is not used to regulate rate, rather to change the abnormal rhythm of your heart.

There is a risk of embolus ( a blood clot within the ciculation) with this procedure. You need anticoagulation if a cardioversion is not done within 48 hours of onset of the arrhythmia.

I have been fine since my cardioversion for atrial flutter. Back in normal sinus/paced rhythm.

Main problem from my cardioversion was the slight red, burn on my back which was sore for a few days.

Best of luck, well worth the try as AF does reduce the functioning of your heart.

Magnensium supplement

I don't have afib, but have been plagued by many other arrhythmias with probably close to 20 ablations.

I take 3 slomag a day, spaced out the best I can.  My ep wanted me to increase, but my system won't handle it.

You know you're wired when...

You have a little piece of high-tech in your chest.
