PLEASE HELP MY SISTER!

Hello to all whom are on this wonderful site. My sister who has been diagnosed with having high blood pressure and is being treated has now found out that she's pregnant with not just one baby but two. She's having twins and she had to change her blood pressure medicine to Metoprolol 100 mg once a day. My question to you is, does anyone know of being pregnant and having to take blood pressure medicine such as Metoprolol succer 100 mg. Does anyone have any input on taking this medicine with pregency. Please help if you have any knowledge on this situations. I'm grateful in advance for you responces. God bless you all and may you have a great week.

Medications

Hi James,

It's nice to see when family members get involved in trying to advocate for their family members. As for the medication she is on; a physician would not knowingly recommend a drug if it were harmful to a fetus. If your sister was placed on the drug before finding out she was pregnant then she needs to contact the doctor and let them know she is pregnant. Get a second opinion if you don't trust the first doctor. Also, remember that a pharmacist is a good resource when it comes to the Rx they are dispensing. If they have reason to be concerned about an effect of a drug or an interaction, they will call the prescribing doctor and discuss it with them. Don't forget that you can look things up on line as well.
Your concern for your sister is admirable. Don't get freaked out though because your sister needs you to be calm.

Metoprolol

Have you sister read the second paragraph of the following and then check with her doctor.

Cautions: DO NOT STOP TAKING METOPROLOL without checking with your doctor. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. BEFORE TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any medicines used to treat colds or congestion. IF YOUR DOCTOR HAS INSTRUCTED YOU TO CHECK your blood pressure and heart rate regularly, be sure to do so.

FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Toprol

Hello!

First of all congrats on becoming an Uncle! I had my second child (a boy) almost 11 months ago and have been taking Toprol (same med as your sister) for about 3 years and will continue to take for the rest of my life. I did not experience any side effects with this medicine nor did it pose any threats with breast feeding after giving birth. Luckily your sister will be heavily monitored with having high blood pressure. I have an ICD for Long QT Syndrome so I experienced all of this. My doseage of Toprol is 75 mg a day so it's a little less than your sister but I have handled that just fine. I do recall it making me a little tired in the beginning until my body adjusted to it (but that could also have been the assortment of other meds). Best of luck to your sister and if you have any other questions regarding pregnancy and heart issues I have probably been through it. :)

Hello James,
When I was a young bride, I discovered I was pregnant with twins! Yes, it was true! What a surprise!
Then I began to develop the health problems that come with carring multiples. High Blood pressure being one of them. The high BP needs to come under control. There are different ways to do that. Bed rest, quiet, a carefully selected diet and medications. It could be that your sister will need a combination of all the things mentioned. I was monitored very closely and even was spent quite a lot of time in the hospital... 45 days to be exact. It was worth it for sure my hubby and I have 2 beautiful twin girls.
I was given medications chosen for pregnant women, I was on bed rest, I was on a special diet, I was taken care of when I stayed in the hosp. I hope I have helped you in some way. It is going to take a lot of love and support for your sister to be able to do this. I know you will be there for her. I can't recall now what it was that I was taking, it has been a number of years ago.
Please keep me posted won't you? Take care, blessings!
