Lead extraction

Hi All

just posting a positive story for those that might be considering lead extraction. I've just had my second in 4 years with no complications. Maintaining the MRI functionality of the system was important to me ( capped leads are a contraindication for an MRI). I had a good electrophysiologist and the surgical protocol ensures availability of emergency treatment so I felt quite safe even though the possibility of a major complication was quoted as one percent.

That is good to know. Thanks for the post. A couple quick questions:

How long were the extracted leads in place (both the 1st and 2nd)?

Approx. how long did the procedure last?

How did you feel post surgery and how long did they keep you in hospital?

Lead extraction

Hi Harrie,

im having a lead extraction next week, making noise, insulation problem, I have a saint jude pm, 8 yrs, 3 yrs left on the battery, I'm hoping they replace the unit as well to avoid coming back in three years.

ill ask about the MRI compatible leads/ pacer.

yes, the said there will be another dr ready in case they are needed, of course I'm a bit nervous but glad to see your post.

Was so happy my second pace maker was MRI compatible.  Then I come to find out that my original leads were not MRI compatible.  Oh well, least I am gaining ground.   Dr. Love at the NYU Medical Center in Manhattan,  N.Y.., who speaks occasionally on the electrophysiology program on X.M. Radio,  has performed thousands of  MRI's on patients with non-compatible pace makers and leads.  However, he will not perform MRI's on patients who have capped off leads due to the intrinsic heat build up and potential for tissue damage . Having a pace maker can be a learning process and  the Pace Maker Club has been a great tool for me getting a better understanding.

Extraction

First lead was 15 months, second 3 years. First one moved  within first month, second one formed scar tissue affecting performance which is unusual because the leads have steroid in the tips to prevent scarring. So neither particularly difficult to extract.

surgery was around 2 hours, they kept me in ICU for monitoring overnight and was allowed home around lunchtime. 

No pain from the incision, just sore throat from the transoesophagal ultrasound they use to monitor your heart. Physically ok but a bit emotionally fragile.

Hi Finn

 Good luck with your procedure! Hopefully they will replace the battery as well. Are you having 2 leads removed or just one?  I was given ( literally, no charge)a new pm as well because the high voltage had diminished the battery life and the pm company  didn't want me going through another procedure in 2 years time. Well that s what the rep said anyway.
