Using a Garmin Fenix

Hi all,

I'm looking to really treat myself to a Garmin Fenix 5x. Can't seem to pin down if this would be a good buy or not. I've read that the heart monitor part doesn't work well with a St Judes pacemaker. Mine is PAS one wire type. The other thing is I wear it on my right wrist as I'm left handed. So would this help me? Hope this question doesn't sound to silly but I don't know who else to query this with apart from the hospital when I have a check up next year.

The stores don't like us playing with them before we buy but after I returned two that wouldn't work for me, I explained my problem to the store manager and they let me try them out in the store. I did this at a large chain sporting goods store as well as two running specialty stores. Never did find one that worked for me, but other members have had better luck.

They tend NOT to work well with electrical issues of the heart.  Like Tracey, Ive returned a couple of them for said reason and returned to the old 'do it yourself' method of checking heart rate.

Please try them in the shop, unless you want a drawer full.    lol

Open Box Policy

Large electronic stores typically have an open box policy. Once the factory seal is broken the product is checked for problems at the store and they discount it to get it off the shelf. Years ago I used to work for a chain who typically supplied large screen TV's to Superbowl fans that were returned after the event. They understand that's the cost of having a 'no questions asked' return policy.

To this day I haven't found a wearable device that's not confused by my condition.

I have posted about my experience with Garmin before. I know others have had issues, I have not. I just upgraded from the 220 to the Felix 3hr. I love Garmin products l have used ones with HR straps both garmi6and after market straps and now the wrist pick up. Again with my Medtronic PM no issues...

Thanks for the comments. I did find a shop willing to let me try for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately for me it seemed to be inaccurate. E.g. my minimum allowed heartbeat rate is 50/min. The unit went below this on more than one occasion. After this I didn’t have confidence in the accuracy of other uses of it and so returned it no problem at all. Thanks again folks.
