MRI

I have a MRI compliant pacemaker. I need an MRI for a lower back problem but  my GP is having a problem finding a local hospital prepared to do this. Has anyone else encountered this problem or have heard of a hospital that will do a MRI for pacemaker patients.

Thanks

MRI and pacemakers UK

The only two cèntres that I know are The Royal Brompton in London and Manchester Royal Infirmary.  My daughter has never had MRI as leads and device are not MRI safe.

Make sure your leads are also MRI compliant and you don't have any loose leads.

The hospital called the manufacturer (Medtronic) to verify the information that was on my id card.

I had an MRI earlier this year and the hospital made me get a chest xray before the actual MRI to make sure there were no loose leads.  The device was placed in safe mode by the rep and after the MRI the rep returned to put it back in normal operationation mode.

This was the 2nd MRI I've had---different body parts--in the last few years.  The first one, at a different hospital, was less of a deal than the 2nd one.  I assume the 2 hospitals have different protocols.

For the 2nd MRI I had to go into the in-patient hospital area for the MRI, they said for my safety in case something went wrong and the device can get hot and damage tissue.  I didn't need contrast but they had to start an IV 'just in case there was a problem  It was a hassel.

Both hospitals were major hospitals, and I know some smaller hospitals, at least in South Florida, won't do MRIs with devices.  Partly because I think they don't have a device rep at the hospital.

Good luck.  You  may want to go to the manufacturer's website and get information on your device, print it out, and bring it to your GP to share with the hospital.

If you are still having problems, contact your EP or surgeon that put in your device for assistance.

Yes!  If you search "MRI" you will find my post about same problem.

I ended up having mine at Barts in London.  I will send you a private message with the contact details of the doctor I mention in my post.

You know you're wired when...

You have a new body part.

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.
