His bundle pacing may prevent need for CRT

Happy New Year everyone!

I just thought I'd find out whether anyone has heard about a new pacing technique which is attracting alot of attention amongst leading EPs.It's called His bundle pacing because the right ventricular lead is placed in  the Bundle of His, which is part of the heart's conducting system lying just below the AV node. The advantage is that this produces a much more synchronised contraction of the ventricles compared to standard pacing. It can also be an alternative to CRT, which means that you don't need a third lead going to the left ventricle. It seems the device companies are not keen to research this area as it may eventually reduce their sales of CRT devices. So at this stage the research studies have been observational rather than more reliable randomised trials. Some EPs are using this technique already with standard pacemakers. You can find out more information on the www.his-pacing.org website
