Cardiac repair

Hi,

I just received a dual chamber PM due to a 3rd degree blockage.  My plumbing was fine and nobody was able to explain why the blockage occurred. (Some people said it could have been sleep apnea???)

My question is this.  I am currently pacing st 99%.  Has anybody known a situation like this when the heart has corrected itself over time?

Thanks,

Edgebull

3rd degree block

It's normal for 3rd degree block to pace pretty much every beat.

Sleep apnea and heart conditions can go hand in hand but they don't know what the connection is. Apnea does not cause heart block. Some medications or infection can cause it, sometimes it happens during other heart surgery or ablations. Moms with Lupus are more likly to have babies with heart block. Most of the time we never know what causes it, we are either born that way or it happens at random in an otherwise healthy heart.  The only time it's possible for it to heal itself is if it occurs as the result of surgery, even then it's not likely. It's an electrical connection that is gone, completely unrelated to the heart muscle or arteries, our physical condition or lifestyle.

The good news is many of us here have the same thing and have been paced for many years with no ill effects or additional heart problems. I got my first in 1994, am healthy and active, heart function is as strong as it ever was.

In fact after the final "tweaks" of my pacemaker programming at the one year check up it is working so well that I forget I have it.
