Scar

Hello,

its been almost 6 months since I had my pacemaker installed. It still itches and my scar seems bigger then what I think it should be. Certain clothes bother it .im over protective over it. I have small children that want me to carry them all the time. I guess I just need reassurance that I’m taking care of it and also not letting it consume my world. I look at the scar all the time and ask my self should it look like this? Should I be able to feel it like this?is it suppose to be this color ? Wondering if anyone else is like this?

Scar appearance

Good advice from Robin1. If the doctors are saying the scar is normal for 6 months out, you might want to try rubbing Bio Oil on it.  I did so almost daily for the best part of a year, and it made a huge difference to the appearance - almost invisible.  Perhaps that might help your anxiety?

My scar is just about at 2 weeks so I can’t really comment on experience. But always best to check with the doctors office if you can or shoot them a picture if you have the means to do so.

I think we all are different in terms of skin and healing and sensibility so it would surprise me that you are expediting normal issues.

I had some stitches from a gash in my shin a few years back and it still hurts  if I bump it but not as bad as a year ago.But even after a year I thought it would not have any extra sensitivity but it did

Scar and sensitive

I think it was over a year before my scar and site quit being sensitive.  You could press on the pacemaker and it wouldn't hurt but the pocket area and the scar on top was really sensitive.  When it finally quit being sensitive it started to itch.  So I'd be walking around scratching the site.

Since I was doing a lot of arm movement as I was doing woodwork in a wood shop, it may have added to the sorness.  I took a lot of tylenol and used hot and cold packs to ease the soreness.

People heal at different rates.  Some on this forum are up and ready to go at four weeks.  For others it just takes longer.  It just depends upon how your body heals.  I know it seems like the soreness will never go away but eventually it does.

Hang in there.

My scar looked bad for a while.  It itched and clothing seemed to irritate it.  That lasted about a month.  After that I did not notice it anymore.  I quit looking at it in the mirror.  It will be seven months on March 18 that I have had my device.  Don't worry about the  scar.  It is part of you.  It is part of living a full life.  I suggest that you go dancing instead of thinking of your scar.

psoriasis

If you’re concerned ask your doc to take a look. After open heart surgery I noticed my scar starting to look bigger at the bottom. I was referred to a dermatologist & lo & behold: I had a mild case of psoriasis which I’d never had before but can show up at scar sites. A topical cream was very effective & no problems since. So even though it’s probably nothing....if it’s continuing to worry you-have it looked at!

Robin1 - where is the gallery you referred to? Is it on this site? I noodled around, but did not find it.....probably don't need to see festering infections at this point, but eventually when my steri-strips <finally> fall off, I'll want to see if mine looks "normal." LOL

For now, I'm happy it's not quite as sore as it was....

You know you're wired when...

You can finally prove that you have a heart.

The pacer systems are really very reliable. The main problem is the incompetent programming of them. If yours is working well for you, get on with life and enjoy it. You probably are more at risk of problems with a valve job than the pacer.
