The pacer is a gas pedal, not a brake pedal. It will add beats when she's too slow, it will fill in when she misses beats. If the heart is going fast on its own, medication can help but the pacer can only watch. If she's getting pvc's, little half beats between the full beats, not much can be done about that. Talk to her doctor, maybe the medication needs adjusting or changed. Irregular can be uncomfortable but it's not necessarily dangerous.

What kind of irregular heart beat is your mom having.

My EP was very clear with me from the beginning. The pacemaker will not help an irregular heartbeat. All it can do is speed up a heart that is going too slow. In other words, a heart beat that is happening later than or after it should.

I have  PVC's and PAC's--quite a lot of them. Sometimes every other beat is a PVC. PVC's and PAC's are contractions that happen before they are supposed to. The pacemaker can make the heart beat faster, but it can't make it beat slower.

Unfortunately, medication hasn't helped me. PVC's and PACs, are uncomfortable sometimes, but I've had them for at least 7 years and I'm still here. So I guess I believe the doctors when they say my irregular heart beat isn't dangerous.
