Question for you Gasman

by IAN MC - 2018-08-02 06:24:47

I had my PM and leads  implanted with a local anaesthetic . I was conscious throughout and was able to return home the same day.  My recovery was rapid and uneventful.

Do you agree that , whenever possible it is better to have  a local, rather than a general anaesthetic for implant surgery ?    Which situations would make you favour a general anaesthetic ??

Thanks

Ian

Local vs. General

by AgentX86 - 2018-08-02 08:29:25

I too had only a local,  for PM implant and AV node ablation.  They kept me overnight,  only because of I was then pacemaker dependent. I also have had three ablations,  a cardiac cath, and a carotid cath (was intended to be a stenting but wasn't needed) all under local, except when they needed to do a cardioversion (but somehow missed the fact that I was conscious once). General anesthesia has significant risks of own.

Interesting, Agent

I was persuaded to have a general anaesthetic when I had an ablation for Atrial Flutter.   The E.P.  said that " some patients experience pain during the ablation procedure "

Being a coward ,  I was easily persuaded !

Ablation pain

by AgentX86 - 2018-08-02 11:18:16

Yes, the ablation process itself is painful but so is dental work. They don't put you under for that, and you're in pain a lot longer. It's a few seconds for each burn. The cardioversion was certainly painful.  I'd rather not have been conscious for that. ;-)

The PM implant was painful too, when they were making the pocket. Not unbearably so.

Anther question for Gasman

by MissFitts - 2018-08-02 11:21:06

i had a local for my PC implant, and a couple of times I was asked to cough and laugh as loudly as I could. What is this, and what happens if the patient is unconscious and can't do either?

Local

by Grateful Heart - 2018-08-02 12:47:12

I had a local when they did the cardiac cath. 10 years ago.  Then with my first implant, I had general and my CRT-D was "tested" and I stayed overnight.

This time, 2 weeks ago, I had a local and spoke with my EP the entire time.  No overnight stay, no testing the defib and sent home 2 hours later.

My how things have changed in a decade!

Not that I necessarily wanted them to "test" the defib on me but.....I hope it works when needed.  lol

something smells

Confused the hell out of me, too.  I see no personal information of any kind.  At least anything that hasn't been discussed here many times before.

Where are you Gasman ?

by IAN MC - 2018-08-04 12:51:21

Say something !  ....   or are you anaesthetised ?

Patch was right!

He's on a tropical island charging everything to your bank account.

The least he could do is send you a "wish you were here" thank you/ postcard.  Geesh

Damn!  Now I won't be able to pay the hospital bill and they'll reposess my pacemaker!
