Atrial arrhythmia is very common and getting moreso.  Having a pacemaker has little or nothing to do with arrhythmias and, unfortunately can't do much about them, either.  There is some work into "pacing people out" of arrhythmias but it's not been very successful.  Because you only found out by getting a letter in the mail, one assumes that you're asymptomatic.  That's good and bad.  The good news is that it doesn't ruin your life but the bad news is that you don't know when you're in arrythmia, so can't deal with it only when it occurs.

Most atrial arrhythmias aren't inherently dangerous.  However, because the heart isn't pumping blood efficiently, as "designed", there is turbulent flow of blood in the heart, which may cause the blood to clot.  If the clot dislodges and goes to the brain, it's an instant stroke.  That will kill, or even worse.  To prevent this, doctors will prescribe anticoagulant drugs. It is critical that people with atrial arrhythmias take these on schedule.

Tachycardia from atrial arrhythmias can also cause ventricular fibrillation and heart faulure, so drugs are used to either slow the heart or put it back in rhythm.  ...but that's another discussion.

The bottom line is that the arrhythmias are is just a couple of additional  things we get to deal with.

Yes, pacemakers can emit sounds to warn you of severe problems, rather like smoke detectors.  Yeah, it would freak me out too.
