DVLA

Hi, before I had my pacemaker fitted I was told be my neurologist that I had to surrender my driving license to DVlA and once I had my pacemaker fitted I just reapplied for it back. I had it fitted ten weeks ago applying for my license straight away, still waiting for its return. Anyone else had this problem?

I don't understand why you surrendered your license unless there was a very lengthy period between being told you needed a pacemaker and having It fitted. Normally you just download the form from the DVLA website and fill it in, no need to send off your license. You need to tell your  insurers as well, but they don't seem bothered.

Neurologist ?

I agree with MissFitts , it is not usual to have to surrender your driving license after a PM implant.

The fact that a neurologist advised you suggests that you have other non-cardiac medical issues which could influence your fitness to drive ?

As you know It is the law here in the UK, that you cannot drive for one week after  implant of a PM and it is all done online without sending off your license.

If I were you I would  ring the DVLA in Swansea and chase it up.

Best of luck

DVLA and pacemakers

I agree with Ian and Missfits.  I completed a form H1 to notify DVLA of the pacemaker, and never had to send in my licence.  They wrote back confirming that I had "satisfied the medical standards for safe driving".  No change is made to the licence conditions/entitlements.

(In case any non-Brits are reading this, DVLA = the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency!)

Hello

I will also echo the other comments, no need to have surrendered your license.

It can all be done online now, you verify your identity online, then fill in the questionnaire

Takes about 2 mins and they say you will get a response withing 10 days

Had a letter back after a week saying I satisfied the medical standards for safe driving

All done

pacemaker or icd

Do you have an ICD or a pacemaker, ICD makes sense, pacemaker does not.  I think here in the US some places will have a two week window, if you get a hit on the ICD then its like 6 months without an event before you can drive.

Hi, I was told to inform DVLA, and so called them.  They said to carry on driving while they get clearance from the Hospital to confirm that i can continue driving beyond the treatment.

Just recently recieved a letter from the Hospital confirming that my licence remains the same.

I was not asked to surrender my licence, but maybe our circumstances are slightly different.  Hope you get it returned soon!

You know you're wired when...

Your license plate reads “Pacer4Life”.

A pacemaker completely solved my problem. In fact, it was implanted just 7 weeks ago and I ran a race today, placed first in my age group.
