Exercise

I am wanting to get back into exercising. A few weeks after my ICD I’m taking some light walks.

Of course I will work with my cardiac teams in-line with their advise.

I am encouraged that some of you are already on bikes/treadmill etc.

Are any of you doing any of the following:

press ups

weight lifting

circuit training

I have been able to get back to my normal weight training (circuit training).  I waited 8 weeks and started out with much lighter weights, gradually increasing them.  I have not gone back to the heaviest (30 lbs) yet.  My plan is to keep increasing very gradually.  So far no problems at all.

I started walking, at the direction of my cardiologist, after my CABG. I've increased distance and incline (treadmill) as I've gotten in better shape (now do 100 to 110 miles a week). I stopped the treadmill for six weeks after the pacemaker surgery but kept walking my normal routine. I did use a sling to take pressure off my shoulder while walking for a couple of weeks.

Hey I hope you don't mind but I sent you a private message along the same lines as this comment.

I am encouraged that you have returned back to weight lifting and circuit training, was it a straight pacemaker or one with a defib too (ICD)?

I had an ICD and I am keen to train.

I have a pacer for heart block, no other health issues. I have clearance from my doctors to do what I want. I deadlift more than my bodyweight, do triple digits overhead, pull ups, push ups, am currently training for a half marathon, kayak every chance I get, emailed my ep a muddy finish line picture after my first Spartan a few months ago. I've been paced since 1994 and started Crossfit in 2011 so I'm not new to pacing or pushing hard. We won't hurt the devices, they are durable and meant to move with us. Ask your doctor what your heart is up to, but the device itself shouldn't have any impact on what you do, as long as it feels ok. ICD's are bigger than pacers, and they don't treat the same conditions so be sure to ask.

After recovery, I resumed normal workouts.  I have an ICD.  The EP only gave me these limits: no full weight chin ups, no rowing of a long boat, weights are OK, but not too heavy, and be careful at altitudes.  Otherwise, I'm good to go exercising as I want.

I find hanging upside down that the ICD moves and when I run fast it doesn't feel good, so I put my hand over it to steady it to my chest.  

I do not do contact sports and avoid hitting the site - hurts ALOT!  Made me a believer in closing the kitchen cabinet doors.

Yes, get back to exercising after healing - it's great for the body and mind.
