Adult With pacemaker

I have a friend with a son who got a pacemaker as a child. His pacemaker is in his abdomin and the leads are failing. He is now an adult at 19. Should his pacemaker be moved up? I have tried to research this and can find nothing. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Unless there's a reason why the leads can't be in the vein, they usually move it at the next replacement after age 12 or so.

Moving a pacemaker

TracyE knows a lot more about the placement of pacemakers in youths but it seems to me that the EP should have a pretty clear answer on this.  My guess would be that they'll move it to the traditional adult location.  There really isn't any reason to keep it where it is.  The leads will probably just be abandoned.

to move or not to move that is the question...

The real question...why are you wondering?

If he's had a replacement in the recent past then there may well be a reason they didn't place it in his shoulder such as artery size, extremely small stature, etc. That's a question for his EP to answer, why it wasn't implanted in his shoulder.

Bottom line, if it works and ain't broke, don't fix it

trust

Your friend or son needs to find a doc they trust and trust the doc they found.  This is the docs problem not yours, not your friends nor your friends son.  There are reasons why they put them in kids where they do and in adults.  Trust TraceyE on this one the doc will put a new one in in the adult spot when it is time.  What happens with the old one is up to the docs.  From what I think I remember reading here they may abandon the leads or the whole device and leads.

Although commonplace now surgery and the hospital stay involves some risk and certainly a lot of cost so they arent going to mess around, they will move when it is time and they will deal with the old device and leads when it is the right time or they will make the decision to turn it off and leave it there.

if the leads are failing then seems like this is the time to move.  But we dont have the whole story the doc does and/or will get the rest of the story during the surgery once in there.
