Yoga

Hi.  I am a "young" 77 year old female with a dual lead pacemaker for 2nd degree heart block which I have had for 11/2 years.  I just started taking beginner yoga and even though my Pacemaker Clinic contact said to go ahead I am worried about the stretches and poses and disconnecting a lead.  Yesterday I felt like I had squeezed my pacemaker during a stretch and it was a little tender afterwards.  Has anyone experienced any problems with yoga?

Leads

The extra lead wire is curled up behind the PM so there is plenty of slack.  I have been going to yoga classes twice a week for the past few years.  Depending on the pose, the skin around my device can feel pulled tight or a little sore afterwards....but the leads are fine.

If anything hurts, back out of the pose a little.  If it still hurts, modify the pose or go into a different pose.  My doctor told me not to do any twisting poses, due to numerous back problems.  So when the class does a twisting pose, I go into a different pose instead of just waiting for the pose to end....others do the same for their skeletal issues.  Just let your yogi know.  Remember, honor your body.

Enjoy yoga,

Grateful Heart

I do Yoga sometimes and usually do Pilates.  I have not had any problems but do a variation if worried. I always do some stretching before classes start.

Yoga with PM

I went back to yoga after a few months, and there are a few poses I stay away from, but I can do almost everything I did before. If you’re a Facebook kinda person, there are a few groups there dedicated to yoga with implanted devices. Yoga for Pacemakers and ICDs is one of them. They offer adaptations for poses, things like that. But you should be good to go. As a beginner, you might feel a bit sore anyway! I love yoga. Enjoy!!
