Who gets what

Just noted that former VP Cheney received a heart transplant when he was 72? - 73? If a like procedure were needed by anyone here, think it would happen?

I'm 62.  If I needed a transplant to live, I would refuse and accept it was my time.

No job is too hard

No job is too hard when the American tax payers foot the bill.

Don't forget he got aVAD first and American tax payers paid for that too.

Must be nice when cost and price are no object.

Was over in the DC area.  Least little bump and they resurface the whole road.  Then make sure it's all pretty.  That's paid for from my taxes too.

In Ohio, after the hole in the road is big enough to lose an 18 wheeler truck, they might put a patch on it.  We know where the money goes.

Mayo Clinic

Watched an interesting show on PBS a few days ago regarding the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and the St. Mary nuns. Evidently, one doesn't just make an appt. at Mayo - they will access your need and see what other medical entities have accomplished for you. Wife and I were in MN to visit our son a couple weeks ago. Friends up there were amazed that I was seen at Mayo last year. - i.e.: "You're from Texas and were able to get appts. at Mayo?"  Evidently, it's not easy to be seen at that institution. The PBS show presented it all.

No, of course not.

No one besides Dick Cheney has ever had a transplant.

Geez! Grow up already!

There are several million of us ...

...who get the same tratment Cheney got.  We are called "Retired Veterans." or "Disabled Veterans."

But before anyone goes off the deep end one way or the oter, read this article on the ethics of it & whether or not he was "too old" for the trnsplant..:  https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=4&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiB7PPl9_LdAhXUJjQIHdqwAVwQFjADegQICBAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Ftheweek.com%2Farticles%2F476972%2Fdick-cheneys-heart-transplant-did-former-vp-special-treatment&usg=AOvVaw1m8teVrD7vfDHCSXVBcK9O

I read the "Former President's Act of 2016."  They & vp's get no more health beefit than any other Gummint employee & have to have 5 yrs of servuce.  So Cheney gets covered by that act.

"Health Benefits
No statutes explicitly govern the payment of health benefits for former Presidents. Generally, however, former federal employees must be enrolled in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program for five years to qualify for health benefits.55 GSA, historically, has interpreted similar service requirements for a former President to qualify as a federal annuitant"

All "advanced therapies" have pecking order....

I'm not complaining but I've already been told that I will not qualify for a heart transplant.  As with everything these days they "score" you based in part on 1) other medical issues  2) life expectancy after therapy 3) social support network 4) tissue type/organ availability  5) how urgent the need is, etc, etc.

I've already been told I will not qualify for transplant and borderline if an LVAD (left ventricular assist device) would be placed.  Even though I'm only 58, I also have COPD so they would want to do lungs while they have me open so that they can get the maximum life expectancy.  As a single person with no children, parents that have passed, and a brother out of state I don't have the social support network for continued care.  Someone has to get me to doctors appointments and make sure I take my meds, and that I'm fed, bathed, and clothed.  There are groups that will offer some help with those things but not at 100%, unless you can afford to pay for it out of pocket.  The reality is that there are far more people needing it than there are organs available and the mechanical items are not yet as reliable as they need to be to outwiegh the costs.
