Are there any athletes in this forum?

Hi!

Is anyone on this forum an athlete? I am looking to talk to anyone that either does triathalons, running races, cycles 100+ miles per week and has a pacemaker.

Kind regards,

Kate

Running

Hi!

I haven't attempted to be a cyclist but love running races! I've loved running my entire life and unfortunately prior to my pacemaker was medically advised that I need to stop throughout my highschool years. Since my pacemaker I've been medically cleared to continue running again though.

Was there a specific question you had about running races with a pacemaker? If it's just to connect with another runner then feel free to send me a personal message and I'd love to chat :)

You will find that there are far more runners on here than you would expect and books have been written trying to explain why athletes are more likely to develop various  cardiac arrythmias later in life.

Still , surprisingly most cardiologists seem to be mentally programmed to see PM patients as UNFIT people  I.M.H.O.  This often ends up as less than ideal advice for fit patients when it comes to installing and adjusting pacemakers.

What exactly is the problem which you would like to discuss.?

I have never thought of myself as an athlete but I am ( or was ) a very keen runnner and have done more half- marathons than I can remember ; as well as marathons in London, Paris, Vienna, Athens and Istanbul.....  to name just a few .  In a moment of insanity I did a half-marathon along the Great Wall in China.  My typical marathon time was between 3.20 and 3.30 which was respectable without being truly "athletic".

I have overtaken ( and been overtaken by ) many girls with pony tails !

Some runners carry on with little fall-off in their  running performance post-pacemaker, but most regrettably don't in my opinion.

Triathlon

I have done half iornman, marathon and many half marathons in the past.

My doctor has advised me not to swim with a pacemaker. Just got an okay to start exercising after 6 months of recovery. Starting with short runs and will add some cycling. Really looking for something to replace the swimming.

Triathon was great for training both upper and lower body.

Thank you!

A big THANK YOU to all that responded. My husband needs a pacemaker implanted due to bradycardia. He is an avid cyclist, mainly mt. biking and a hiker. He has been researching the various brands of pacemakers. His electrical cardiologist recommenmded a few, but said that the decision is ultimatley up to my husband. He is very nervous and hesitant about having a device implanted.

Kind regards,

Kate
