AV ablation

Are there many who had the av node ablated and totally dependent on the pacemaker for pacing?

AV NODE

I had AV node ablation about 3 years ago after ICD gave me 2 inappropriate shocks-very quick procedure after only spending the day in hospital and never think about it as far better than ICD firing

Pacing

Yup, that's me. First 3 tries at atrial ablation by a TCAI EP were failures.  Fourth try in June 2011 appeared successfull. Then on Jan 31, 2012 I developed a 125 heart rate. Prior to the first check with the EP, his nurse called and asked, "Well, how do you feel?"  I felt OK, but I know a pulse of 75 would have made me feel better. When he saw me, my issue was described as a NSR tachycardia. He did not show concern, and offerred no solution. Then, on May 11, 2012 a he-man A-Fib w/RVR event erupted. I spent the night at St. David's Hosp. in Austin, TX.  The next AM a different EP showed up - the original EP had washed his hands of me - ala Pilate. New EP offered another try, but I declined and went for the A-V Node ablation w/pacemaker. Life became more normal afterward. BTW: There is a known issue that fits what happened to me: "TIC"  ----- tachycardia induced cardiomyopathy. Subsequent echocardiologist I hooked up with stated this: "That E.P.'s inaction regarding your tachycardia was the major factor with you developing heart failure."   The original TCAI EP's name? --- Think of the Sunday paper Army comic character who antagonized "Sarge."

Not had an ablation, but 100% paced

Not sure if it is the ablation or the pacing that is biggest concern, but surgery complication caused my problem, when they fitted a new aortic valve 4 years ago.  But no problems with the pacing I think.

Thanks for the responses. It really helps to connect with others who understand. 😊❤️

AV node ablation

#MeToo

I had an AV node ablation in February, after a Maze just traded Afib for Aflutter, 18 months of dicking around with drugs (fail), then three failed ablations over 18 months.

Since flutter no longer bothers me (100% of the time but I can't feel it), over the last couple of weeks my heart decided to get my attention with strings of PVCs (bigeminy).

AV node ablation coming up

I've had a PM fitted (in preparation) and will be having an AV-node ablation on Monday.  I can't wait!

History: 15 years of increasingly symptomatic AF, treated with drugs (ablation wasn't an option back in 2003), most of which didn't make any difference and the one that did work (disopyramide) -- at least to the point that my normal heart rate was 80 and I could function --  for nearly 10 years eventually prolonged my QT interval to the point that my cardiologist went pale when he saw my ECG, 5 years ago.  After I came off that, nothing else has worked for more than a few months.  Past 4 years, I've been in persisent AF (100% of the time) with a "normal" rate between 80-145. (Digoxin has at least brought that down from 100-200.)

When I saw my (new) EP earlier this year, his comment was: you've fallen off the end of the tick sheet for drugs we could try, and it's far too late for ablation to be successful.  All we can offer is 'pace-and-ablate' or stay as you are.  So I grabbed his offer of 'pace-and-ablate' with both hands.

Yesterday I moved to a new place in my mind and realized how bad I felt 'before' and the difference my pacemaker has made.
