When can I pick up my baby???

Hey guys!

I'm 4 weeks to the day post surgery from getting my first Pacemaker. It was placed under my muscle. I have a 7 month old at home and I haven't been able to pick him up this whole time. :(  I've had mixed reviews on when I can actually pick him up. 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks, maybe longer. He is 20 lbs. Anyone have any thoughts if now is ok?

Thanks!

Ask ten doctors, get 10 answers! It's probably fine but you might want to make a quick call to the office and verify. My doctor was ok with up to 20 pounds as soon as I felt up to it. Others say 5 or 10. And yep, instructions are anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks, depending who you ask. The reality is it's all precaution after the first few days. There was a study about a year ago, patients with no restrictions vs those with the traditional 6 week limitations- incident of dislodged lead was the same in both groups. My own doctor has gone from 6 to 2 weeks since I've been seeing him (2011). When I got my first one in 1994, no one gave me any instructions other than taking care of the stitches.

I had a replacement when I had a baby and a toddler. I got around it by spending a lot of time on the floor with them, was a lot easier to dress them and change diapers if I could scoot them around rather than pick them up. I picked them up with  my right arm and held them on my right hip, used the left arm for balance, or had someone hand them to me. You get creative!

You're probably OK, at this point but the right answer is "ask your EP".  Really, he or someone on his team should have gone over all of this stuff with you.

I am a Grandmother and this was the hardest part of this whole process, not being able to pick up my grandchild. I waited 8 weeks just to be on the safe side and I am glad I did.
