Shoveling my stupid car out

Today was fun, the first real snow since I had my heart attack and I got to shovel snow around my car. Took 2 hours while it normally takes 20-30 minutes and despite a highish heart rate, 130, and some heavy breathing it wasnt that bad just slow. I'm counting that as my cardio today and they can fight me.

I hope that you have been to cardiac rehabilitation ( shown to improve outcomes after a myocardial infarction{MI]) ?

I would advise anyone who has had an MI  to undergo proper supervised exercise  in a cardiac rehab programme, before doing any severe exercise themselves. In this way you are in an environment with people trained to understand as to what is a safe level of exercise. The outcome of a' self test ' may prove to be your last.

The cold itself increases the work load on the heart.

oh yeah, went through all that already. warmed up, stretched beforehand and drank water. I didnt push crazy hard though I'm used to doing it fast.

You are 40 & already had a heart attack.. You go out & shovel snow in -30 degree Fahrenheit weather.  Your heart rate gets to 130, you breathe hard, sucking all that bitter cold air right past your already-stressed out heart & its arteries.  All that cold aier stresses it even further. 

You, my friend are asking for another MI & it could very well be the last one you have.  40 YO men are NOT supposed to have MI's.  When they do, they are usually fatal.  You are Da&^%$ LUCKY TO BE ALIVE RIGHT NOW.  I lost a friend to that kind of stupidity in Iowa a whole bunch of years ago.

Did you go through Phase 3 cardiac Rehab?  That involves a long period of time doung monitored, but unsupervised work at your own rate to build you up for living a normal life.  The rehab that typically gets done is Phases 1 & 2.  Phase 1 - in the hospbed IMMEDiATELY after the event.  Phase 2 - immediately after discharge - shoprt term, structured, performed while wearing telemetry monitored by an RN.  Does not truly prepare you for heavy work.

I have always pushed myself both for work and for my persona life. I used my breathing rate as an indicator and never went harder than during my rehab. I also live in the north if I let the cold imprison me I would hardly ever leave the house. I went slow and super light at first and built it up slowly. it was tiring but not the end of the world and I have to shovel or my car gets towed. I understand it's not great but it is great for anyone to do and in my normal job shoveling snow isnt much. I'm tired of being told everything is impossible, you start slow and pace yourself to gain back your strength. being cold sucks but if you layer you warm back up. I wasnt doong shovel fills of snow and I wasnt going like a madman. I was told to work to hard breathing but stop before it gets hard to breathe which I did. I'm not going to shrivel up and be useless because of this, I saw so many people doing nothing at rehab and that isnt me. I was fit and active before this and I will be after this, I'm not being stupid about it but I am pushing and I will not let this make me a doddering old man that cant do anything. I went through 8 weeks of rehab at my pace, monitored the whole time and aside from my last work out, which I really pushed myself, I took it easy. Everytime I pushed myself it was like I was returning to my old life. I check with my cardio doctor regularly, I listen to them but damned if I let this define everything about me, I'm diabetic already and no one knows that unless they offer me food aggressively because it doesnt define me and this doesnt either.
