Work

Hello this is my first time on the site. I’m 56 years old just had a icd installed in March . It’s been a little over a month. Left bundle branch block ,genetics, ejection fraction of 10 . I’m not getting a lot better yet but my question is this I’m not able to do work at all at this point and wandering if others in my position have been able to go back to work or is disability something I’m going to need to look at. My reading shows lots of folks gain 5 to 10 percent after getting there devices put in and wandering at 20 to 25 percent ejection will I feel good enough to work or will I still have lots of limitations. I’m self employed and insurance and hospital bills are major after all of this. I’ve already spent 20000 out of pocket this year and know I will have more medicall each year than I have in the previous years. With that said I’ll need some income to help with this if my work is not there anymore. Wandering if others have been in this situation and what you’ve done.

thanks

Did you just get diagnosed or has your EF been going down over time?

I was first diagnosed 12 years ago with an EF of 12. I took 3 months off of work and took all sorts of medications.My EF increased to the 20's and I felt  much better.  My Cardiologist told me that she would support me if I wanted to go on disability or if I wanted to get back to work.I went back to work but  I had to go to cardiac rehab some afternoons, but no real lmitations.

Listen to your body. If you feel up to it, go to work.

Disability = Medicare

If you get on disability (SSDI) you will also be qualified for medicare. If you go that route make sure you set up your online accounts at medicare.gov and ssa.gov.  Be carefull of web sites that use similar names!  Medicare Part A will cover almost all hospital bills (less $1K copay) and Medicare Part B will cover 80% of doctors and lab tests.  Part D is prescription drugs and you will have to select and pay for that plan, there's a good search tool on the medicare site.  Then there are "supplement" plans, Generally you want a part C or F though those will soon be discontinued.  They pay that other 20% of medical bills.  And of course, there are Medicare Advantage plans that are a whole other animal.  Not really available or useful in my area as noone accepts them so I don't know much about them but again plenty of info available out there.  Good luck, hope you can get back to work but if not, there is help out there as long as you have worked and paid in to the system.
