Surgery Recovery

Just had surgery on Tuesday.  I feel super tired and even when I lay on the opposite side of my ICD I feel like there is pressure where the ICD is located.  I go back to the doctor on Wednesday.  Is this normal???  Also, how long did people take off of work?

Me?

I had a PM installed under the skin not the muscle .  I took a couple of weeks off mostly because I could - depends on what you do in your job I guess . Mine is not physically demanding and I have lots of flexibility- I could have gone back much  sooner .

sounds like these procedures are pretty much an "as tolerated " proposition  after a few days and depends on what you do.

I see

I know how you feel. But just try to relax and give time to your body and mind to adjust to this positive change

Depending on your surgery and personal details, it may take you upto 1 year to fully forget your ICD. Or it may take less then 2-3 months

Just think positive. Your quality of life will improve tremendously. And just start living your life from where you left off. And trust me, in no time, you will even forget that you had a ICD

Good luck

Perfectly normal

I slept in a recliner for two months. I probably could have gotten by with one but it was five months with my bypass surgery and I wasn't taking any chances.

I took the day of surgery off(a Monday) and the following day, only because I was discharged too late to bother. I went back the third day (Wednesday). I work pretty much at a desk, though. I was back to walking immediately.

Everyone is different, though. I had it really easy, despite having an AV ablation at the same time.

Ditto on what's been said - you are perfectly normal

I just had my ICD implanted 4 weeks ago. I could not believe how tired I was the first week afterwards. I took that first week off even though my doc said I could go back to my desk job after a couple of days. I kept thinking "geez, it's just a two inch incision - what's the big deal??"  But in reality, it is a huge invasion on your body. It just doesn't seem like it. The swelling will go down, which will relieve the pressure you are feeling. Everyone is different depending on your physical condition and mind set. Just listen to your body, and don't let things get inside your head. For me, I still have some very minor pain at the incision when I press on it, but nothing that is uncomfortable in day to day life. I was back on the eliptcal two weeks later. Doc says I can fully hit the gym again in 4 more weeks. I think the biggest thing for me is getting used to the idea I have this foreign metal computer under my skin that I can see and feel. I don't think I'll ever get used to that, but I don't dwell on it either. And I'm sure glad it's there if I ever need it. Just know you are not alone. That's what the group is for.  Take care of yourself.......

I had my ICD placed in January and am a Kindergarten para.  I actaully went back after 4 weeks, 5 hours a day and it was challenging. I was totally planning on returning after 3 weeks but was still SO tired - as evidenced by sleeping in till 10 am every day! I'm normally a really easy early riser and tend not to sleep past 7 or 8 am on weekends. I move around a lot in the classroom and use my arms WAY more than I realized so all the movement, stretching, etc of my left arm (my ICD is sub pectoral) was too much as those muscles were just starting to heal.

I had to go through it all again in April for a pocket revision and thought I'd go back after 3 weeks again, but listened to my body and waited till 4 weeks. At that point we only had 2 weeks left of school, but I needed to see all those sweet little faces again before the end of the school year!  :)  My friends and co-workers encouraged me to take the rest of the spring semester off, but I knew I'd then have all of summer vacation to let everything heal up so I just made sure not to overdo it in the classroom those 2 weeks.

Thank You

Thanks for all the comments, this is super helpful.  I am still really tired and will end up going back to work a little short of two weeks but only have to work a week before I am off for Christmas break.  I do not sit down a lot, I am not a sitting teacher but I may have to for this next week.  :)  Have a wonderful holiday.
