Warming The Heart

Hi All,
I hope you will forgive me for sharing a little story with you that has nothing to do with my PM...or yours in fact. lol

We live in Winnipeg, Manitoba where the winters are usually brutal. We are terribly worried about the homeless and how they must be struggling for survival. My spouse and I contacted our children and asked them to bring $10.00 each so that we could buy new warm socks to give to our street people. This would allow us to buy about 25-35 pairs.....and they did.

With this little effort completed we felt so bad because we knew there would be 20-35 people out there with warmer feet and about 1965 homeless people suffering with the agony of frozen feet. We just couldn't live with that so we began a campaign (just the two of us retired old goats). We call the campaign, "When You Live in a Box, You Need Warm Sox." Believe it or not it caught on. In 6 weeks we have distributed 1,123 pairs of socks and the money is still coming in. My heart has never felt so good!!!

Perhaps if everyone who lives in a cold climate could buy an extra pair of socks and drop them off at a shelter or at a fundraising group for the homeless in your community it would make a huge difference to however many folks you can help. Trust me, your heart will feel great.

Happy Holidays to each and everyone of you

Nuka

Great Idea

It has been cold here in Anchorage. Alaska & I love your idea. I am off to Wal-Mart tomorrow to do just that.
It was -15 F degrees below zero last few nights. Great idea, Nuka.

Hi Nuka,
God bless you and your husband for starting this project ( a ministry of love) and loving these people who most consider unlovable. They are just like the rest of us but for whatever reason have fallen on hard times. You, your husband and children are truly some of those "angels unaware" that we read of in the scriptures. You will be blessed many times over.

I am a volunteer at Orange County Rescue Mission in So. CA. We don't have the extreme winters like other places but at night it can be bitterly cold if you have to sleep outside. OCRMs motto is "Serving The Least, The Last and The Lost of Orange County. This time of year socks are one of the most needed items along with blankets or fleece throws. We have a group of young men from a local high school who about 5 years ago started "Jocks for Socks" and it has grown tremendously. They keep it going year-to-year. As one group graduates there are always others who step up. What you are doing is such a gift from the heart and I hope your idea catches on across the country. Working with the homeless or near-homeless has really opened my eyes to the how many people are one paycheck away from being on the street. Another item that is an absolute necessity are hygiene kits - baggies with a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. in them. If all of us do our part to help we can make life easier for these folks who have no where else to turn. Some of the stories we hear are unbelievable. Thank you again for your generosity in caring and giving. I wish you the very happiest Christmas time with your family. Doesn't giving make you feel good all over, better than anything else?

Socks

Nuka,

What a beautiful idea that is. My son feeds the homeless once a week with a group from his college. I will buy socks and send them with him. He has heart breaking stories of how some of these people have ended up living in this park. I live a very sheltered life in a small town where we don't see these kind of things often and I don't always know how to help. Thanks for the idea.

Thank you all for your positive, encouraging comments expecially Janet, Michelle, Sharon and of course Pacergirl.

This has been e very emotional day for me. You all have deeply touched my heart that you would take up the tourch and distributed some socks to the homeless people in your own communities. WOW !!! Who could have asked for more? I am very encouraged by the stories of young people working with the street people. In spite of the high crime levels we have some fine young people coming up. If one of your young ones is among them please give them a huge" BRAVO" from me.

Hugs to all of you,
Nuka

I just want to share about the quality of life after my pacemaker, and hopefully increase awareness that lifestyles do not have to be drastically modified just because we are pacemaker recipients.
