Latest Lamb News

Hi folks

Our little one passed away yesterday. We called her Bluey because she wore a blue jumper. The weather has been so bad cold and frosty and now it is wet with a bad wind chill factor.
The sheep actually belong to the farm next door. Each year they give birth in the paddock next to our house. It is like a birthing ward with Ewes grunting and groaning just like us ladies giving birth. As we can hear them at night I just cannot bear it when the little ones get seperated or rejected by their mothers. Each night we go down the water pipe line and see if there are any lost wee ones. They cry so badly. It has been a bad year for still births and rejections. I think because of the drought the ewes think they can only cope with one that's enough so they just walk away. Or the little uns get lost when the tractor drops the feed. Mum is so hungry she just forgets them. The farmer is such a lovely neighbour. He lets me help him with his sheep and when they go away we look after the farm. Our house is on 2 acres which was annexed from the farm and sold by the senior of the family. One night a couple of years ago I was woken by this lamb crying and crying. I searched in the night by torchlight. About four days later I noticed a dead lamb in the dog kennel. He had climbed through the fence and found shelter. I never thought of looking in the dog kennel.

I love the sheep they really are biblical animals and very social. They know their names and two that I reared are back to birth. Frosty and Mandy. They came back in when they were moved up from the beach front paddock. The ewes are kept for breeding. The rams are exported for breeding stock. My first ram was called Rej Short for Reject. When it was time for him to go back into the flock the farmer said: Welcome to the real world Reg." It is just a hobby. I find that being with the sheep is great for depression. Same as most animals. End of story folks. Pace well. Keep well. I have a couple of funny animal stories. Any others out there too? Jokes. Will post them tomorrow. Cheer. Billie

Hi Billie - Loved reading your update. Have wondered since your first posting about the baby how it was doing. Sorry it did not make it but God in his infinite wisdom knows best. I love sheep as you do. To me they are spiritually defined in the Bible. We are His sheep and He is the Shepherd - I just love that scripture. If the ewes are still having their babies do you think you might have another little one or more to take care of? Good laugh about Rej vs Reg! Thanks for the laugh to get me going. Blessings.

Billie:

Your posts from Down Under make me
feel as though I'm with you.

It's sad to think drought is doing so much harm.

We had a very poor winter rain/snow season
as well. Water conservation is necessary.

Please keep up the stories.
