BillMFI / Franks Question

Hi BillMFI, ElectricFrank posted a query that you may not have noticed , reference one of your comments.
The question was did you feel anything when they were using external pacing using large pads on your leg etc. I think this is a valid question as the pulse has to travel a long way to reach the heart and its power would be greatly dissapated. One could easily imagine a feint tingling or electric shock sensation occuring. What was it like and how did it feel , also for how long were you paced externally during the proceedure to have your pacemaker replaced?Cheers Peter

THe large electrodes were put in place before rolling me into the OR. I was only awake for a few minutes before the procedure began, and then out I went for the duration. I don't know if they had to use them or not. I woke up in recovery after it was all over. The pads were removed by the recovery nurse. I'm pretty sure you will be under too, in which case you won't feel anything. I doubt if the current is as strong as an ICD. It doesn't take much DC to penetrate the body and stimulate the hearts pacemaker cells. Its not like stand clear, paddles, zap! I will ask for more info at my next Cardiologist visit in two weeks.

Thanks

I just left a PM to Bill and then discovered this post. Thanks to all. I've been curious about it since I will likely be getting a replacement in a year or so. I chose to stay completely awake during the implant and it worked out so well for me I want to do the same for the replacement.
