Cavitron Dental Cleaning

Hi,
My periodontist wants to do deep scaling with a Cavitron. I have heard that they are "mostly" safe within certain limits, but does anyone know if having unipolar wires, rather than bipolar wires to their PM makes any difference?
Thanks for any information you can give me.
I appreciate it.

Cavitron cleaning.

A California dentist had this to say on the subject.
I hope it helps.

Plaque and most tarter can be removed with a cavitron, which uses ultrasonic sound waves traveling through a jet of water to vibrate plaque and tarter from teeth. (Those who wear a pacemaker should not get ultrasonic cleaning, because a cavitron can interfere with the function of the pacemaker.) The remainder of the tarter must be removed with scaling tools, which are specially shaped scrapers.

Cavitron

Hi, Gellia.

My dentist's office uses Cavitron as their preferred method of doing cleanings because of how fast and efficient it is. However, now that I have my pm, they won't touch me with a ten foot pole!!! So, now I'm back to the old fashioned method. :) So much for those 15 minute dental appointments! LOL

No Cavitron

One of my possible majors in college was to be a dental hygienist. (sp)? However, when I was doing my 16 hours observational work, they found out I had a pacemaker and that was the end of that. They said I would be unable to use the equipment necessary to be a hygienist and so I got out of it. So to answer your question--No we are not allowed to have cavitron cleaning. Does your dentist know you have a pacer?

Question on difference...

by Swedeheart - 2008-06-29 03:06:52

Hi,

The question was on a Cavitron ultrasonic and waterjet cleaning... now my dentist office uses some sort of waterjet (I am clueless if ultrasonic...) for regular cleaning. I looked on the Medtronic website and they list the ultrasonic cleaning as safe.

I have emailed Medtronic directly and should receive an answer tomorrow... this is timely for me as I have my first cleaning scheduled since my implant this coming week!

Is the "Cavitron" different than the regular cleaning equipment? Thanks.

Contact your maker...

Hello,

I contacted Medtronic and this is the response I received about my PM:

Our tests indicate that our heart devices are extremely resistant to
outside electrical interference. Heart devices have a titanium case
around them which guards against many types of outside electrical
interference. Additionally, Medtronic has designed filters into our
heart devices that also block out many electrical interference signals.
Dental cleaning will not interfere with the function of your heart
device. The equipment must, of course, be in proper working condition
and meet current electrical safety standards

Good luck!

Cavitron and Dental Cleaning

So, it seems that there are 2 schools of thought concerning using a Cavitron when the patient has a Pacemaker. Since this is an old post, I wondering if there have been any updates over the past few years. Such as, is is safe for a Dentist to use the Cavotron when you have a Pacemaker.

You know you're wired when...

You have a new body part.
