Long Distance Travel with my Pacemaker

Everyone has some worry and stress over traveling long distance with our pacemakers.  I have taken three long distance trips over the past 18-months with no issues.  I just recently to a 23 day holiday in Japan on an 11 hour flight from San Francisco to Tokyo with no issues.

I did monitor my oxygen rate as the aircraft are pressurized to 7,500 feet.  My O2 level did drop from 98% to 91% while at altitude but it was not an issues and returned to normal after landing.

I would caution flyer be aware the airline food does have about 30% salt in it because food does taste different at altitude.  Your water intake will go up flying long distances.

When I returned home this past week my pacer downloaded to my remote monitor.  I monitored by blood pressure during my recent vacation with my portable blood pressure machine.  My jet lag was uncomfortable but manageable going and returning.  Be advised that fatigue was a factor because of the jet lag.

I am back home now getting over jet lag from Japan back to the U.S.  My only concern was my diet and Japanese food does contain more salt than what I am used to at home.  However, you can manage salt intake while you travel.

My message is don’t be afraid to travel it is a real pick you up.  In the process of planning another oversea trip this winter.

glad to hear you are traveling with out major problems.  I know that when traveling at least for me, I do have to bring my own food.  So that elminates the salty foods on the plane and airports.

Stache, your 23 day trip to Japan sounded wonderful - just what we need!  We haven't had a proper holiday for years.

We are not so much worrried about our pacemakers;  they are tucked away out of sight.  We are just overwhelmed by all our medical supplies (insulin, inhalers, supplies for the bladder and bowel - I am sure you will get the picture!) that we have to take on any trip.  It all gets a bit too much sometimes and it is easier to stay in the comfort of our own home.

Can you post some pics in the Gallery?  That would be really nice

Thanks for sharing your uplifting story!

Your story provided a much needed boost. Dealing with dietary restrictions on salt intake is challenging when traveling, as well as the potential effects of dehydration on long flights, but you describe it as workable. It is inspiring to read your message. Thanks again and happy trails!
