Good question!

Debbie,

Thanks for asking this question! I haven't had mine long enough to see if I will gain weight.... I think... I have had mine a little over 10 weeks now. At first I lost about 10 pounds (I thought that was great...) but I felt really lousy and had no appetite. Now that I am finally feeling better I have certainly gained my appetite back... and the 10 pounds are coming back. I am hoping the pounds don't keep rolling on.... !!!

Since your PM have you been put on beta blockers or any new meds? Beta-blockers will add weight to most folks. So, first of all I would ask your doctor about your meds and if they are the culprit.

I know I don't have nearly the energy I had prior to my PM, but I am hoping that will improve. I try to walk about 5 times a week for a half hour at least. I don't walk fast at all, I just walk and a steady pace. If I get tired I sit on a bench and rest, then keep going. I was originally hoping this might help curb the pounds that are returning. But at any rate I think it is good for me, so I am trying to keep it up for the long haul.

I am afraid I don't have an answer to your question, but I am hoping others will respond. I hope the little weight gain I am seeing will quit soon!

Hello Debbie - I've gained 21 lbs since my PM. Like Swedeheart I lost a great deal of weight shortly after the operation as I'd no appetitte and felt unwell. However, my appetite improved as I began to feel better and instantly I began to put on the lbs at a rate faster than normal! I take 2.5mgs of bisoprolol daily and blame this and possibly the flecainide with which it's combined. I hate to look at myself in the glass and feel flaccid, heavy-limbed and unattractive. This much vaunted energy I was supposed to be going to have is dissipated by the effects of the beta-blocker and the fact I'm so heavy. I can't get my tidy clothes on and have no intention of buying new fat clothes. I'm thinking of seeing my GP about it as I can swear to the fact that I eat no more than 700 calories daily and, like Swedeheart, I walk 30 minutes daily, weather permitting. Not at a fast rate, but a steady rate. I feel as though as I were wading through treacle! They're always raving on about women in particular shifting excess weight from around their stomach and abdomen as it's bad for the heart, then they stuff us with medication which make us fat. Isn't this a swings and roundabouts situation? Let's hope someone can comfort us with a solution to the problem. Kind wishes. Wannabe

It is hard to exercise after getting a PM, but you have to force yourself to get out for a walk at least. I normally eat a lot and am very active. I cut WAY down on my eating after my PM and and still gained about 10 pounds. You should eat 5 SMALL meals a day and you gotta move around. You body doesn't make fat out of the air, it stores calories from the food you eat.

When you stop eating, your body goes into starvation mode and stores whatever you eat as fat and makes you tired. When you eat regular meals, your body learns that food is plentiful and burns calories more efficiently. You'll feel more energetic too.

I think about food like I think about money. "Do I want to spend $5 on a cup of coffee, or buy $5 of stock in the company?" Food is the same. "Do I want to entertain myself with pizza and gain a couple of pounds, or eat a decent meal and stay on track with my weight?"

I call junk food "entertainment" as to not fool myself that things like pizza and ice cream is food.

Don't get me wrong, I do eat pizza and I love ice cream, I just keep it in perspective. It works for me, your mileage may vary.

BetaBlockers- weight loss

I'm on a small dose (80mg) of Inderal a day and I do believe that I am having a heck of a time losing weight because of it. My weight had crept up 10 lbs in a couple of months before the PM implant because I had slacked off the exercise and now I just can't seem to lose weight. Before my PM, I could lose a pound or two with regular 3-4 days per week of an hour of walking/running. Now nothing! Can someone confirm that BB's have an effect? I know they slow down the metabolism. I'm thinking of doing without to see what will happen
