Electric car chargers and pacemakers

Hello, I read in The Sunday Times at the weekend that one day wireless car charging *plates in the ground* "may be commonplace".

I think this is something the pacemaker community needs to be aware of. As far as I know there is nothing to worry about with ordinary charges beside the road or in parking bays but wireless charging plates might be a different matter.

Chiefsub, perhaps you could post the link so that we can all give our views? 

My feeling is that we wouldn’t be sitting in the car directly over the charging plate for the whole period of charging, so I don’t feel our pacemakers would necessarily be affected, especially if we observe a safe distance.  If we start getting symptoms, then we would need to move away to reset our devices.

How fast is the charging from these plates set into the ground and where are they being trialled?  Can you give more information?

Wireless car charging seems a good idea, and it’s not new or untested technology.   I see it is much the same technology as the wireless phone charging that’s now an everyday convenience, so I fail to see a problem?

Only my opinion --- To do this on any scale will require, tearing up thousands of miles of road and installing these "plates" - whether they be a cable or actual plate. That alone would be in the trillions of dollars.

Then you have to be concerned about the power to charge these. The infrastructure in the US isn't capable of it and WINDMILLS AND SOLAR PANELS aren't going to be enough. Many more trillions of dollars to upgrade the power supply.

In short, and as I said it's only my opinion -- but it ain't gonna happen.

The plates are at specific sites, like at a home, or a public lot. They will not be continuous, under roads.
