ANTI-SOLARIUM campaigner Clare Oliver has lost her fight against cancer.

Ms Oliver, 26, died today surrounded by family and close friends, a spokeswoman for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre said.

"It is with great sadness we announce that Clare Oliver has lost her battle with melanoma. Clare passed away peacefully this morning at approximately 8am (AEST).

"She was surrounded by family and close friends."

Clare captured the hearts of a nation and Australia's top policy makers with her courageous campaign against solariums, which she blamed for contributing to her cancer.

Her touching story prompted the Victorian government to last month announce new laws to tighten control of the state's solarium industry.

Prime Minister John Howard responded by flagging uniform laws to regulate the industry nationwide.

Under the Victorian legislation, solariums must give health warnings to customers about the risks of using tanning beds and must obtain informed consent.

Clare was diagnosed with a melanoma three years ago when she discovered a strange lump under her arm.

The lump was removed and she carried on with her life, travelling overseas and completing a second university degree.

But the cancer came back to haunt her and her battle became terminal.

Clare loved a tan and spoke publicly about her regrets visiting solariums, which she believed helped cut short her life.

Hi Pete

It was so sad to see how Claire suffered. It was a lesson in what not to do. But, as I said in a previous posting, everyone is different.

I am in Tasmania. Whereabouts are you? Cheers Billie
