So, odd feeling while working out...

So, I did my chest workout tonight. Usual workout routine, but I've been gaining weight and strength again (proabably because I'm down to just 80 mg/day of sotalol), but I had the oddest/strangest feeling.

Where the ICD is, after my flat banch press (265 lbs 3 sets/8 reps), I had the oddest sensation. It felt like you were rubbing material like rope against rope. It's hard to describe, but that's what it felt like. Didn't hurt or anything, just felt odd. Now, maybe it was my shoulder joint, maybe it was a tendon just rubbing something, but it was odd.....

I guess it could just be the scar tissue tearing or something also.

Your odd sensation

Hi turboz24,
I have not had the sensation you describe, but I have noticed that as I put on weight and size again I get some bruising around the perimeter of my ICD. How often do you work out? Do you do any cardio? I think that the gym is some of the best medicine. If I am feeling bloated in my abdomen it seems that working out draws blood out of your organs for use in the skeletal muscles and really reduces that god awful bloat. Staying strong physically at least makes me feel I really have some control over this heart failure sh**. Hang in there man, I am and I am determined to fight the hell out of this and you should too. God Bless

I usually weight lift 5 times a week, usually around 1-1.25 hrs every evening. I do ride my bike most weekends, but with cardio, if it's running or similar, all it usually does for me is cause me to loose muscle mass, so I tend to stay away from running for cardio work.

I would assume your ICD is on top of the pec muscle and not under? Mine is just under the skin, but I don't know if it's bruised, red, or what not since I haven't looked at myself shirtless for 10 months, but the last time a nurse looked at it for me (let's see... 4 months ago), she said the hump looked like crap, but the skin over it looked ok.

So, basically unless mine starts leaking something or starts to hurt excessively, I will not know if/when I have issues with the skin covering it. I do have the nurse at the EP clinic look at it every so often, though.

Sensations

Hi Turboz24,
Are the sensations on the surface of your skin or deeper under your skin? Do the sensations seem to concentrate in the area of your ICD?
I have a PM and over the last month or so, I have been feeling a tingling (somewhat "electrical") sensations on the surface of my skin on my left side around my PM (about a 6 to 8 inch radius). They seem to show up when I am lying down and last for a few minutes.
I have no idea what it is and will talk with my cardiologist sometime in August.
Sorry, I'm not being helpful here. Just wondering if this is at all like what you have going on.
Peace,
Richan

Yes.

It is centered around the ICD it seems, not on the surface of my skin, but the surface vs the ICD isn't that much different, since there is probably only around 1/16" - 1/8th" or flesh over my ICD.

It has that almost friction feeling + sometimes it also feels like a twitch sometimes, but as I stated it only seems to be there after working the muscle. It isn't the typical feeling of muscle fatigue/pain since I know that one well.

I know the feeling

I had Open Heart in 3/08 and PM/Defib 6/6/08. Was told nothing above shoulders for 6-7 weeks then no heavy lifting above head.

I went from 225 before the OHS to 160 a month ago. I am now able to go in the gym and work mostly relatively low wts, high reps, circuit ... keeping my pulse around 95-100. Good for cardio as well as gaining strength ... now around 172. The back, arms and shoulders are filling in nice.

The Pecs give me a weird feeling after workouts on them. My Pec under the PM always seem sore, but no real pain to speak of. Dr says Pec workouts fine, but no heavy weights over head ...

You know you're wired when...

You have a dymo-powered bike.

Sometimes a device must be tuned a few times before it is right. My cardiologist said it is like fine tuning a car.
