Why do people say shoulder.....

I've always wondered why people refer to their Pacer or ICD being implanted in their shoulder...

Unless you have something weird (ie on top of your deltoid...) it's on your chest...

Now, if it's slipped up under your clavical, then I can guess you can say shoulder.....

Just wondering....

Mine is practically sitting on my clavicle.....that's where they put it, just a smidge under.

Sometimes it feels like it's rubbing, but that sensation is starting to go away...finally. PM implanted Feb. 22/08.

I'll be glad when I can sleep comfortably on my left-side, it makes my AFib break through.....hope that's going to go away soon.

mine

Mine is placed around 1-1.5" down from my collar bone and 1-1.5" from my arm pit, so I consider it pretty much out in the open on my upper chest.

I was pretty much wondering if a lot of people have it placed higher up.

Mine get's close to the collar bone when I lift my arm straight up, then since my pec muscle moves up, it lifts the ICD so that the top of the ICD is sitting over my collar bone (not on the bone, the muscle is still between them).

shoulder........chest........

Shoulder..chest.....armpit its packed away in there someplace!! LOL Mine feels closer to my shoulder yet pokes out in my darn armpit now. I guess its just my preference to say shoulder cuz Lord knows I dont need to draw any attention to my "chest" LOL its is noticeable enough on its own!! So thats why I say shoulder Turbo ;)

Semantics...

I've heard shoulder, chest, breast, collarbone - whatever.
Some have them in their stomachs, waist,, abdomen, tummys, tum-tums (from what I understand, they often locate children's PMs in their abdomen).

I've also heard people refer to their surgery different ways (implant, install, addition, attached, embedded, etc.)

Shoulder...placement

by pacergirl - 2008-08-15 12:08:42

Hi, I am not a large woman... but not so small either.

My Pacemaker is just about 1" from the top of my left shoulder and in the front. I could say it is in my chest but that would not be accurate either. Not many people have actually seen my bare chest but I think those that have, would agree with me that it is quite high in the left shoulder region. In fact it sticks out some and is easily felt when I am given a hug from the side! So that is why I say my shoulder. :-)
Some of us just aren't big enough or have space to have it in our chest.
Good question!

Breast

I had to have mine placed under my breast as they had to run the leads differently because of my tricuspid valve replacement. It has been about 3 weeks. It feels weird sometimes having it in that location. I hope I will get used to it.

I've seen many posts about people being concerned about exercise after having a device so thought I would let you know that yesterday I raced my first marathon since having my pacemaker fitted in fall 2004.
