My take on it.

It's easy to make the decision if you just can't function without it. (Having your heart stop could ruin your whole day). It's those borderline cases that are difficult. I would say the first thing to do is find a cardiologist who you trust and who implants them regularly. It is tricky getting those leads attached to the heart, but the experts do it all the time. It is also a good idea to have the programming checkups done by the pacer company rep. my experience is that they are much better at it than the cardiologist or some nurse. Once you get past finding a doc you trust, then I would say if the pacer improves your quality of life and gives you more confidence, then go for it. Keep in mind that the modern pacer is a demand device. If it is programmed correctly it only kicks in when your heart needs it. If it isn't needed much then the batteries last a long time.

Yesterday was my first day mountain biking after my implant. I wiped out several times and everything is fine. There are sports after pacemakers!
