Beta Blockers

Perhaps someone can tell me why by reading all our messages does everyone end up taking beta blockers if they didn't take them before. Doesn't make sense to me.

I stopped taking the beta blockers for three days with doctors approval, I tested my heart walking and with a 60 resting pulse walking only went to 72 quite content with that, although not use to it.

Going up hill was another matter it went to 110. Not sure what pulse should be on exercise. Any ideas anyone.

Have you a pacemaker as well as the beta blockers?

Beta Blockers

Hello Jules,

I take a beta blocker because my doctor prescribes them and insists that I take the things. And yes they have the dreadful side effect of making me feel as if I have joined a colony of the walking dead.

But that is me and a number of other people, but not everyone. My wife takes one and has for some 25+ years and it has never bothered her.

For me a beta blocker was prescribed to lower my heart rate to some low point in order to stop arrhythmia. But doing this it take my heart's natural pacemaker out of the circuit and lets my pacemaker take over the function of making my heart beat. In this case the manmade PM gives a more regular or stable heart beat. This works for many people, but not me.

Since I am told that not all beta blockers have this effect on everyone, when my doctor say "here, try this one" I take the prescription, have it filled and take it long enough to see if I will be sent back to that colony of the walking dead. If this happens, I then lie to the doctor and say yeas I'm taking them but I don't like them and tell him why. And my current doctor will say "well just try them a little longer as that side effect may go away."

I've had 10 to 15 different doctors in my life of heart problems and this has been the routine with all of them. Only 2 have accepted my word and tried to find something that will do what is needed and not make me feel so poorly. Unfortunately one of them died and the other moved away.

But that is the reason I take beta blockers and I expect my story is pretty near true for many others.

Best regards,

Smitty

I have a well tuned pacer. I hardly know I have it. I am 76 year old, hike and camp alone in the desert. I have more energy than I have had in a long time. The only problem is my wife wants to have a knob installed so she can turn the pacer down.
