Pacemaker Complications

Hello everyone. I do't have a pacemaker, but my mother had one implanted about 4 weeks ago. For some reason the incision did not heal 100%. She went back to here surgeon and he had here immediately admitted to the hospital thinking that her body may be rejecting the pacemaker.
Is this common?

Since this is all happening now, I have no follow-up information.

Since I am out of state, I have not had a chance to talk directly to the doctor. I will be flying home this weekend, and will definitely provide an update as to her prognosis. Thanks for the concern.

Wish her well!

Hello,

I do not know if pacemakers are ever rejected... I have one, but I am just at 4 weeks like your Mom. Please let your Mom know we will be thinking positive thoughts for her!

Perhaps she has developed an infection at the PM site? Did the doctor mention that as a possibility? Especially if it hasn't healed properly.

Please keep us informed on her progress and ultimate dignosis... we all learn from each other!

Again, wish your Mom the best! Be sure to be there with her, it will really help her if you can!

Great Info CathrynB

Thanks so much CathrynB. I have printed your information and expect the doctor to contact me some time today after he has seen my mom. While the information I have is "preliminary" it is all I have to go on so far. I did read while researching pacemakers that one of the side effects could be an infection.
I became when he came in on his day off to see her.
Huge thanks for the concern. I am so glad I found this site.

REJECTION

I think it is very unlikely to be a rejection of the pacemaker and or leads. Far more likely to be some kind of infection. Needs immediate attention though. The titanium case of the pacemaker is 100% inert in its reaction to body tissue.

Hello everyone...
Again thatnsk to everyone to posted regarding my mother's condition back in March. Please accept my spologies for not responding sooner regarding a prognosis, but ot be honest I forgot the web site information.

Anyway, the news was good. The suture that the surgeon used was supposed to dissolve. Most of it did, but a small part of it didn't. This caused and absess at the wound site.

She was in the hosiptal for one week mainly to ensure the antibotics were taking affect.

This was indeed rare. Thanks again to everyone for your input and concern.

It's much better to live with a pacemaker than to risk your life without one.
