Upgradation of pacemaker

I had implanted a single chamber V V I R pacemaker in May 2008 after suffering from viral myocarditis. According to my doctor I had beating as well as pumping difficulties. Before implantation my doctor had told me that I might need a dual chamber pacemaker but went for the single chamber one. Eight months later he asked me to remain prepared to upgrade to a dual chamber pacemaker, but did not spell any time limit by which I should upgrade. Two months later I developed breathing difficulties and consulted my doctor. After conducting an echocardiography he said that I needed a triple chamber pacemaker. He told me that I had severe pumping difficulties. Thank God, I had not immediately upgraded to the dual chamber one, otherwise it would have proved worthless for me two months later. Now I am not sure whether the triple chmber pacemaker can take care of future complicacies or I will have to upgrade further. Has anybody faced situatios similar to mine ? I will be eagerly waiting for responses to this post.

You were just implanted with the latest generation of pacemakers. You physician gave you this type to control the timing of your ventricular contractions in oreder to maximize your stroke volume and cardiac output. This pacing therapy is called Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT). IMHO your physician was spot on to maximize your "pumping difficulties".

As for my pacemaker (almost 7 years old) I like to think of it in the terms of the old Timex commercial - takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
