Who knows?

Hello all you wonderful people.I have a Medtronic addroi that was implanted on the 27thJune 07 for neuro cardiogenic syncope. On a few occasions my heart rate has gone up to 180 without me doing very much.Once even while i was sleeping. My cardiologist put me on two separate medications but neither of them agreed with me.Last week i had a Holter and tomorrow i go for an Echo.I'm a 34 year old male and want to know if anyone else out there has experienced this and what has been done to rectify the problem.

Possible PMT?

by ela-girl - 2009-06-27 01:06:27

Hi, Ian.

I, too, have NCS. I am 32 and had my dual chamber pm implanted almost 3 years ago. I also have severe bradycardia. From time to time, I would have some tachy/brady episodes and was put on Toprol XL 50mg daily for this problem. It didn't help. Just gave me other issues. Once I got the pm, I got off the meds because the pm "fixed" me.

The only thing I can think of that might explain your heart rate going up like that is PMT (pacemaker mediated tachycardia). I have some issues with that once in awhile and it's usually when I'm not doing much activity. It was taken care of by tweaking a setting. I can look on my pm report to get the name of the setting...I can't remember off the top of my head what it's called. Let me know if you need to know how PMT's are caused.

Of course, there could be other reasons why your heart rate is jumping up like that without much movement. I'm glad you're on top of it and having other tests etc.

Keep us posted...

Me too

I went for a regular cardiologist appointment last year, and my HR was 160-ish. I hadn' noticed. He had me admitted to CCU immediately, and they poked and prodded all night, but once my HR came back to normal by taking propafenone, they booted me out.

That cost me $5K...expensive accommodations. When it happened again a few months later, I told the doctor that I didn't want another big bill (crappy insurance), so he treated me in his office with propafenone, and I've been taking it every day (225mg x 3). You could set your watch by my pulse...60 at rest.

I got a new pacer put in this January (wore out the battery in my old one...8yrs.), and still on the propafeneone with no problems.

By the way, I went to Canada to get my new pacer (I'm Canadian). Had to stay 3 months after surgery to fulfill the government rules, but it was a lot better than the $50K they wanted here in Savannah, GA.

And if there are any Canadians out there thinking that I used the system...I still pay Canadian tax (15% on my pension), despite being a legal permanent resident of the U.S. And, I served 30 yrs in the Navy...I paid, and am paying my dues.

Good luck Ian.

Cheers,
Mike
