antihistimines and beta blockers

Has anyone noticed increased side effects when taking an antihistimine and beta blocker at the same time? I read both labels carefully and there are no indications that one can't be taken with the other. I usually choose tavist because it doesn't have side effects for me but this is the first I've taken it since I've been on the atenolol and it knocked me right out. I thought I was just tired from being sick so I took it again the next day, slept most of the day. Haven't tried it again! Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, if I need to be asking my dr more questions about things I need to avoid while on atenolol.

Antihistamines make you sleepy

Most antihistamines make you sleepy, so the combination of the beta blockers and the antihistamines would probably make you really tired.

I take Solgar's Quercetin Complex with Vitamin C for my sinuses and allergies. Quercetin is a bioflavanoid, and is like a natural antihistamine. It is great for allergies and helps me a lot.

Hi Tracey, Having been plagued with pine wood alergy I've been real familiar with benadryl. As you know it's a great sleeping aid used in hospitals as a "sleeping pill". I've been using Tylenol PM which is a combo of Tylenol & Benadryl for pain and also relief from colds.

Guess I really didn't notice any differant effects while on tenormin in the past 18 years. After not taking any for months the first & second dosage always knocks my pants off. Ignorance maybe is bliss as I never noticed any HR or rythmn changes with this medication but sure does the job for getting rest. Haven't been able to find Tylenol PM locally since the recall. I just take regular Tylenol & Benadryl. I'll have to try the Quercetin with Vitamin C next time the common cold gets to me. Hopefully I won't be imagining irregular HR. Remember "What you don't know won't hurt you"!! Thanks for the input. donb

I was told not to take anything OTC?
I've not had a cold since I got it (almost a year ago, oh why did I type that???) so I guess I'll just suffer when I do. LOL

mspacer, supposedly tavist is non-drowsy, and for me it used to be! This isn't allergies, it's aftermath of the flu. I used to have bad allergies but between a chinese herbalist and a chiropractor, haven't had to take anything for them in years now.

Liz, he didn't tell me anything! But I will call the office Monday and ask. Or maybe the pharmacy, they're usually better at drug interactions than the drs. Now that I know it makes me so sleepy I won't take it during the day again but I'd like to know if it's simply annoying or dangerous.

don, I'm an insomniac (well, not this last week LOL) and I will take a benedryl at bedtime if I've had a few bad nights in a row. The dr said it was harmless but I don't do it often.

I also was told not to take anything over the counter
and to check with my Dr if I got a bad cold or cough
which I haven't had either for quite awhile....:)

You know you're wired when...

You prefer rechargeable batteries.
