nned your input regarding protective gear

Hi pacers!
I need your inout. I am working on a product, along with an athletic trainer, that I made for my daughter who is now eight and has been pacing since she was three. It is a protective device/gear for when she plays sports. It is patent pending and we are in the marketing/devolpment phase. I have brought the product to both of her cardiologists(Columbia Pres. in NYC) and they both encouraged this product. Anne,
I'm sorry that had happened to you. That's exactly why I went to an athletic trainer to help me. I don't want my daughter to feel "different". It's never too late to start playing sports again...tennis, racketball, etc. We should be up and running within the next few months. I will sure post an ad here for our product. 'Keep on pacing!

I wish there had been something for me to wear like this. I got one 9 years ago when I was 12 and had played soccer up until that point. It was devestating when they told me I couldn't play. I don't know if they will let her play in schools or not. I know that was a huge issue. They can never be too careful and they don't want to take any risks with her gear hitting someone else and injuring them no matter how small it is. They do the same thing with casts. But maybe with what you've made they will let her. In the mean time it would have been nice to be able to still play with my friends and not had to sit on the sides. Either way I know my parents would have gotten me one so that I could still participate in some things... You may want to check with a coach and ask if they would allow it. Hope this helped! It's so nice to hear someone is trying to come up with an alternative to sitting out.

Hi! My almost 5 year old son has had a pacemaker since he was 18 months (3rd degree heart block, we think because of a virus). Anyway, his EP told me 2 weeks ago that he was lifting many of the restrictions that he originally put on my son due to a recent study of "incidental damage" to pacemakers in regards to sports. (I'm sorry, I don't know any more details about the study he was referring to.) Contact sports and activities (football, wrestling) are still out, as are sports where repeated trauma to the abdomen is expected (soccer, dodgeball, etc). But he felt that sports with possible incidental contact (baseball, basketball, kickball) would be okay. The EP did say that he would feel differently if my son were completely pacemaker dependent--ie if didn't have an underlying heart rate due to his sinus node working--it's just his AV node that doesn't work. Needless to say, We are so excited!!! However, a protector would still be a desirable thing, as far as I am concerned. Lord knows I don't want those leads to break any earlier than they have to!!!

Hi there!! I am sooooo glad you are doing this! I am new to this pm site and I posted my comment last week looking for just that - protective gear for kids. I wasn't yet familiar to the site and I didn't look around so I hadn't read your's. My son is three years old now and received his pacemaker last X-mas (2006). Hiya,
I'm currently thirteen, have had a PM/Diffrib. since i was about eight( so i'm not completly used to it yet )
and one of the things i used to do was play baseball.
I want to start softball again (six years later)
but my parents are extremely over-protective.
and say i have to wear some kind of protection.
I haven't been able to find anything yet.
I would greatly appreiciate it if I could find out more about the gear you are working on it.
I think parents who try as hard as they can to make their kids with some kind of heart problem feel normal are doing the perfect thing.
Because being a kid, you seem VERY un-normal.
and it can hurt.
