Warfarin

Almost anything that you eat or swallow can have an effect on Warfarin (Coumadin). Alcohol, antacids, antihistamines, barbiturates, diuretics, Vitamin C, acetaminophen, antibiotics, anabolic steroids, ibuprofen, flu virus vaccine, naproxen, salicylates, Vitamin K, are only a few of the many. Travel, changes in diet, environment, physical state, etc. may also influence the patient's response. You just have to check your PT regularly and whenever other medications are initiated, discontinued, or taken haphazaardly.

I agree

I agree with Ted. EVERYTHING affects the Coumadin!!
Add vegies, esp.green ones (salads) as have Vitamin K which affects the level in blood, cranberry & their products, grapefruit & its juice, exercise, Tylenol. Everybody has a different response & I can only second what Ted says above-get your blood level checked frequently with changes. Drug usually prevents strokes, etc but you need to be aware that it is very sensitive. It can be a drag but better than the alternative. :-)

Check with the anticoagulant clinic if you go to one. I agree with two posters before me. I've been on warfarin forever.

Coumadin & Omega 3

I have a pacemaker for 6 years and on Coumadin 4 mg/day. I always take a minimum of 1000 mg /day of omega 3 fatty acids without noticeable side-effect. Control of the vitamin K was important to me.

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.
