There are a number of parents here with young children and even babies with pacemakers. There are also a few teenagers who have had one since birth. I'm sure one of them will speak up! Lots of us have pacemakers in order to make sure our heart rate doesn't drop too low, adults and kids alike for a variety of reasons. The pacemaker has a minimum heart rate setting- usually 50 or 60 bpm. Most of the time, the pm will just monitor what his heart is doing. If his rate starts to drop off, the pm will step in and add extra beats to keep the rate up.

I was diagnosed with my heart condition when I was 5 and I don't remember not having it. I'm a mom now, and I can tell you it was a lot harder on my mom than it was on me! Kids are resilient and bounce back quickly. They don't think things through like adults and worry about the implications, it's just the way life is. Best wishes to both you and your son.
