Heart Rate

What TraceyE and the others have said is correct. The pacer cannot lower your HR. You probably should discuss with your physician and you may need either an ablation procedure or perhaps you need a beta blocker or other drug. I have the same kind of pacer you have, and mine sits there most of the time and kicks in when needed to prevent skipped beats or to ensure my heart is not beating too slowly. Works great.

Of course, there are other factors that may also be contributing such as diet, exercise, your general health, weight, etc. My recommendation would be to discuss with your physician and/or cardiologist. Since you indicate that you have an irregular HR they may want to put you on a Holter monitor to see what is going on. Good luck!

Hi Anita,
What was the pacemaker implanted for? I had a pacemaker implanted in 92 to take care of the low heart rates I was experiencing, however for 6 more years I battled with high and irregular rates. Medicine after medicine either didn't work, or cause problamatic symptoms. In 98 I had a cardiac ablation which has pretty much taken care of the problem completely.

What does your doctor say? I know after my pacemaker I spent a few weeks in the hospital trying to regulate my meds.

Good luck, Patti

How long since your implant? It takes a month or two, sometimes longer, for your body to adjust. In addition to getting your medication regulated, it is possible that the settings on your pm need tweaked. The settings they come with are not right for everyone.

Your pulse will never stay the same all the time. It's normal to go up and down. When someone says their resting rate is 80, they don't mean it stays 80 all the time, that's an average.

A pm cannot slow down a fast hr. It can speed up a slow heart, fill in missed beats and make sure your ventricle beats when your atria does, but it can't make it go slower, stop fibrillation or pvc's.

I have low blood pressure too. Recently I have had alot of trouble with it and syncope as a result. I can't increase my salt and or water intake because it only causes me to urinate more because I use diuretics. Reducing the diuretics was not a glld plan because they are really important for controlling my water retention. Because of this it was the only thing left to do was to adjust my beta blocker and Ace inhibitors. My doctor lowered my ACE inhibitor by 25 mg which worked good and then attempted to lower my beta blocker. That didn't work so good. It did help increase my blood pressure a little bit but caused my heart rate to jump.
I'm not a doctor and every ones here has different illness' and respond differently to different meds. Learning about the effects of various meds is really a good plan. Be informed when you talk to your doctors.

good luck,
joy

Fast Heart Rate

After my husband had a pacemaker put in his doctors put him on a beta blocker, I believe it was called Coreg.
I know I have a beta blocker that I take for a rapid heart rate. It is called atenolol.

If your fast heart rate bothers you ask him if one of the drugs to slow down your heart rate would be acceptable in your condition.

Good Luck,

Alice

It is just over 10 years since a dual lead device was implanted for complete heart block. It has worked perfectly and I have traveled well near two million miles internationally since then.
