The strangest thing happened the other day!!!!

Hi fellow pacers! As a lot of you are aware I've had a parathyroid tumour removed this year and havn't been to the gym for some months. That's all sorted now and I'm back fighting fit......but I went back to the gym for the first time this week.

I had a great workout, was really pleased that I'd not lost too much of my fitness levels......and then suddenly........i got my pacemaker beating and my chest was moving up and down, like a pulse just above my pm. There was no pain, I didnt feel dizzy, in fact I thought it was quite funny and everyone was watching it and felt the pulse. Went off after a few mins and I went for a swim.

Any ideas?????

yes that was exactly where the pulse was! my leads are looped just above my pm and that was where the pulse was, it was really really strong, you could actually see it! i didnt do anything in the gym that could have pulled my wires though, but i did work really really hard on the treadmill. ive checked my pulse and it's 70 as normal, my pre pacer rate was about 40 so the pacer must still be working, and i feel totally fine!

Well I'm sure there are many more qualified people to answer this. I experienced what sounds like a lesser version of this when a lead failed and they tried to fix it by I think, changing the type of electrical pulse or possibly polarity of the bad lead. So one possibility is if there is an insulation break or some other problem with a lead, the pulse could be felt at the junction where it enters the vein. If there is no other problem and you never get this again, then maybe it's just one of those unexplained experiences we sometimes deal with.

Hope it's nothing serious and look forward to other opinions (as I think I tend to look at the worst first- bad habit)

Best of luck

Pulsing Vein?

by SMITTY - 2011-11-20 10:11:34

Hello HH,

I think if you will click on Member Gallery (see upper left side of home page) and put in the member name "Juan" you will see a schematic of a pacemaker installation that may help understand what you are feeling As you will see the leads go through a pretty good size vein - I don't know all of the names it goes by, but the one given me is Great Vein. Anyway that vein is almost a half-inch in dia and if your heart was really pumping, like it will do sometimes, you can see that vein pulsing. Or at least I can see mine.

Otherwise I don't have a hint why you are seeing that. But it should make for a good conversation with your Dr.

My pacemaker was installed in 1998 and I have not felt better. The mental part is the toughest.
