MIG/ARC Welding

Hey

I'm a starting mechanic and when working in a garage i'm around welders and such very often. I was wondering if anyone had any knew if this was a problem and if so how far of a distance away from the welder should maintain?

What Peggy said! You can do other types of welding, but arc welding is definitely on the no-no list for us. The mfr would have to tell you how far you have to keep back from it.

My doctor and mfg told me stay away from arc welders -- although not around any anyway. If it was me, I would absolutely contact the PM manufacturer tech dept and ask them the questions. They are the specialists about your PM, or should be. Good luck!!

Most Mfg's say to keep 24" away from the welder itself, and the tip. They also say to not wrap yourself with the cable, but you shouldn't do that anyway. The hospital says 12".

It also all depends on if you are PM dependent, etc. Since I only need my ICD for arrythmia's, the worse thing that could happen is the ICD get's disabled because of the EMF or it thinks the EMF is my pulse, and shocks me innaproperately.

So far, I have had neither issue.

Hi there. I am 100 dependant on my pacemaker, and was very nervous about being around welders. I do welding as a hobby and when fixing up my old junk :)
I have been doing quite a bit of welding with a small AC welder, and have been around a serious fabricating shop with no effects, and no interferences showing up when I am interogated. The only problem I have had is learning to weld with the stinger held out instead of close to my body. If I feel any interfence my plan is to stop the arc, which will stop the inerference and everything should come good.
I have a Medtronics pacemaker.

Hope this helps

John
