Beta Blockers

Hi Mandy,.

Different people react differently to beta blockers, or any medication so far as that goes. I for one had about as soon be taking arsenic as to take a beta blocker. The beta blocker probably would not kill me as quickly as arsenic, but in the end the results will be the same. Then, there are many people, my wife for example, that take beta blockers with no repercussions at all.

Your treatment for SVT and palpitations with a beta blocker is a standard treatment, one which doctors use frequently. But I have been told that not all beta blockers have the same side effects, so I say try the Propranolol if that is what your doctor recommends. Just be aware that this medicine can make your problem go away, not change or get worse. And I don't see it as a reflection on a doctor to not be able to predict what the response will be by any individual. At least you have a doctor that is willing to listen and try something different.

To answer your question, I am not now taking any beta blockers now although since 1982 I have tried 8 or 9 different ones to solve an irregular heart beat problem with all having the same results. That is most of them would help the irregular heart beat problem, but I also felt as if I had a terminal case of flu along with other problems from the beta blocker, which to me was worse than the irregular heart beat.

So work with your doctor and don't hesitate to tell him when you know a medications is not working, or that it has an unacceptable side effect. Most doctors have many tricks in their bag of goodies and the conscientious ones will be willing to try different things to help a patient.

I wish you the best,

Propranolol

I have no experience with Nebivolol. However I have had experience with propranolol and find it effective in managing my afib & palpitations. It has an overall calming effect on me. I did not experience any side effects with this medicine. As many will share on this site, the effects are not universal and vary person to person. By the way, I do not have svt so the situation may be different.

I hope this helps.
