Questions

I was at the pacemaker clinic at my doctor's office and posted at the check in was a list of foods/spices to be avoided. Licorice and cinnamon were two on the list. I can't remmber the others but these two stuck out in my mind. I know that licorice can mess with your potasium levels if you eat a whole bag in a 24 hour period. Not that I have ever eaten a whole bag of Twizzlers in that time frame. Is this a coumadin issue or is something that an AV block patient should worry about. I've been jonesing for some Good and Plenty and I forgot to ask my cardio on Wednesday.

Thanks,
D

only black licorice

Twizzler is not Licorice....just some red candy concoction. Black licorice is what they're warning you about.

You can eat Twizzlers or Red Rope to your heart's content and the side effect will be a bigger waist line and possibly a tummy ache.

Red or Black it doesn't matter!

I love them both! Thanks everyone for the info. I don't have an issue with BP and I don't take the medicines in question so I guess I will chance the tummy ache.

never heard of diet restrictions

They found my AV block in 1970 so I've been through a few cardiologists over the years and not a single one of them has ever given me foods to avoid. I choose to avoid high fat, high cholesterol and salty foods, I've already got wiring issues so it would be stupid of me to bring on preventable plumbing issues on top of it.

I saw something recently that cinnamon is actually good for your heart because it mimics insulin and lowers blood sugar as well as cholesterol, and I saw another article (but can't find it now!) that it boosts your immune system.

Ah!!! I think I found it at the bottom of the article above. High amounts of cinnamon- 2 tsp per day as a supplement- can prevent clots. If you're already on coumadin that probably isn't a good idea because your meds are already working to do that. Even my very cinnamony cinnamon cookie recipe only has a tablespoon in the whole batch (4-5 dozen cookies) so I don't think you need to avoid food with it, just don't go looking for a supplement.

Found this on licorice

Like the cinnamon, just don't take a supplement. I don't think a handful of G&P is going to hurt you.

diet restriction

I use to work in a cardiology office. Licorice is one to avoid ( Black that is) because it can effect Blood pressure. and Tracey is correct cinnamon can mess with coumadin and warfarin, although we would tell our pts not to use in excess.

It goes back to the old saying that if you eat all the right things you won't live longer..it just seem longer.
